This
photo shows the view due South from Bear Road: Woodvale Lodge and the
viaduct are both clearly visible. Photo by Mr. C. Horlock By GHOST TRAINS - 8/3/2008 12:06 AM *************************************************************************************************************************************************** |
I
was born in Newmarket Road (parallel to Bear Road and with the Bass
advertising poster on corner) in 1944 and lived there till 1967. The
grocer shop in the foreground I knew as Rowlands, with next door,
Spurriers the bakers. They baked on the premises and I remember to this
day the wonderful smell of baking bread emanating from their basement
in Newmarket Road. The Gaiety cinema was built in 1937 on the corner of Hollingdean Road, where the poster advertising Alice Delysia is shown. Woodvale Lodge I remember as a very impressive castle-like flint structure. As boys, my chum and I used to sit on 'The Arches' parapet and look down on the traffic passing below! Vividly happy memories of growing up in lovely Brighton! By Roy Davis - 12/16/2008 8:53 PM |
