ABOVE: This photo shows the view looking
towards Lewes Road
and Sainsburys from the Bonchurch Cutting. The site has been cleared and will
shortly play host to a residential block, appropriately named Viaduct Court.
The Road central to the picture is Hartington Road.
The road bridge shown elsewhere in this chapter would have stood in the centre
of the photo. St. Martin’s Primary School now
stands on the cleared area beyond the tree, which was originally an embankment
leading up to the eastern end of the viaduct.
The abrupt end of the viaduct shown in this
picture is not where it crossed Lewes
Road as in previous pictures; Lewes Road is where the single large span
is. The viaduct instead ends somewhere in the square formed by Melbourne Street in
this picture.
Note the roofline of Cox’s Pill Factory can
be clearly seen next to the western end of the viaduct.
